Best known as a scenic resort area tucked away in one of the
most beautiful areas of the state, Lake Oconee is home to some
of the most prestigious gated neighborhoods in the southeastern
United States. The area boast eight world class golf courses
with a number of the courses ranked in the Top 25 in Georgia. Tennis,
golf, swimming, boating, horseback riding, volleyball, skiing, fishing
and more are available in the area for enjoyment by all.
The lake area has very warm summers,
with highs between 80 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit, and very mild winters,
with temperatures dropping below 40 degrees Fahrenheit only during December,
January, and February, and rarely during daylight hours.
Lake Oconee is the largest lake in Georgia
Power's hydroelectric system and the second largest lake in
the state. The lake was formed in 1979 with the completion
of Wallace Dam and covers approximately 19,050 acres. The lake is
located in Greene, Putnam, and Morgan Counties in central
Georgia. The shoreline of the lake is more than 374 miles
long.
Water levels on Lake Oconee stay relatively stable,
varying only 18 to 24 inches each day as the water is used to
generate electricity during peak demand periods. During low demand
periods the water is pumped back into Lake Oconee from its sister
lake to the south, Lake Sinclair. Lake Oconee is not used for
flood or drought control.
Georgia Power owns and controls a strip
of land that varies in width from approximately 25 feet to 200
feet around the perimeter of the lake to assure managed control of the
shoreline for aesthetic and environmental protection. Owners of
tracts of land adjacent to the Company's strip apply for a
shoreline use permit to construct and maintain certain structures
such as walkways on the strip, or docks and sea walls along the
margin of the lake.
Lake Oconee is one of the best fishing lakes
in the southeast. It was listed by Sports Afield as one
of America's 20 Hottest Bass Lakes. Bassmaster
Magazine wrote "Georgia's Oconee: A Well-Kept Secret with
374 miles of shoreline, more than 1,200 acres of standing timber,
endless miles of rip-rap, a mind boggling amount of bass-holding
deepwater structure, and abundance of productive shallow water
cover, several consistent creeks and some aquatic vegetation,
it has something to suit the favorite fishing style of every visitor.
